Zebra Jasper

Zebra Agate, better known as Zebra stone, usually have a speckled and mottled overall appearance. Alternate black and white shiny stripes give this silicate mineral a unique appearance. Sometimes, black and white shades get replaced by green, brown and red. These color replacements depend upon the composition of impurity. This unique appearance exists in none other than Zebra Jasper, which is a micro-granular impure variety of silica. Unlike quartz, silica particles form a characteristic pattern giving high stability to the stone. Jasper belongs to opaque and high-density chalcedony minerals containing high concentrations of iron oxides together with different clays.

Zebra stone exists as a metamorphic rock. Protolith type of metamorphic form includes igneous and sedimentary rocks where the latter two can occur as original existent forms as well. Zebra Jasper has characteristics of black and white color with alternate stripes. It has vitreous luster and moderate specific gravity ranging around 2.59 to 2.88. It has Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, same as Quartz, while its cleavage planes are indiscernible. With a refractive index of 1.54 to 1.55, it possesses a microcrystalline Hexagonal-Trigonal system. It generally occurs in a massive form but occasionally may occur as nodular, mammillary, or botrydial form. It has conchoidal or splintery fracture while it lacks pleochroism. Jasper is mined all around the world but the Zebra variety is mined exclusively in lands of Brazil and Africa.
