Belonging to the category of silicate mineral, Scolecite basically forms in the weathered basalts with other zeolites as a cavity mineral.  It can also occur in contact metamorphic zones as well as in dikes obtained from syenitic and gabbroic magmas, amphibolites, gneisses, and laccoliths.  Described in 1813, this hydrated calcium silicate is normally available as sprays of thin prismatic needles slanted at the ends and flattened at a side.  The grooves and ridges in the stone are parallel to the needles’ length.  It is one of the gemstones that are found in many regions of the world including Scotland, California, Riverside County, India, Iceland, and others.

Scolecite has a pseudo-tetragonal habit and monoclinic crystal system.  Optically, it belongs to the group of stone with Biaxial/- character. It has strong dispersion with a refractive index of 1.512 to 1.523 and birefringence of 0.011. Chemically formularized as CaAl2Si3O10•3H2O, Scolecite gemstone generally has the colorless white appearance but there are green, pink, red and salmon variations. It has a whitish streak and also emits yellow to brown fluorescence in SW UV and LW. It has a vitreous luster which also can be silky if it is fibrous. It is a tectosilicate mineral with thin prismatic needles that can send out fibrous masses. Though inflexible and brittle in nature, the stone can be dissolved with a common acid. Scolecite has a diaphaneity that ranges from transparent, translucent, to opaque with a Moh’s hardness of 5 to 5.5 and specific gravity of 2.20 to 2.23. Though it does not fracture regularly and evenly, it has a perfect cleavage quality of 110 and 110.

Hailed in crystal healing as a peaceful and calming stone, many people consider Scolecite as an aid for effective mediation. With it, the third eye chakra can be opened and feel uplifted. Besides, connections with extraterrestrial and inter-dimensional beings such as fairies, spirit guides, and angels are believed to be established with this stone. It is supposed to awaken the higher mind and third eye of the bearers, making it possible for them to gain insight into the future or look into the past to learn the ancient wisdom. It is believed to be the key to unlocking the Akashic records.
