Rutile

Rutile is a naturally-occurring form of titanium dioxide, TiO2. It is called Rutile, which is coined from the Latin word for red “Rutilus” because of the deep red color displayed by some of its variations when viewed from transmitted light. Chemically, the red-colored stone can contain certain impurities in varying amount with niobium and tantalum and iron being the most common. Naturally, it forms on igneous and metamorphic rocks with high temperature and pressure. Though it occurs more on plutonic igneous rocks, some other extrusive igneous rocks especially kimberlites and lamproites which have deep mantle sources can also contain this mineral.

Rutile is a monoclinic form of titanium dioxide which is an invaluable material used in the production of some optical items required for enhanced and prolonged visibility because of its impressive uniaxial (+) optical properties. This stone is valued for its high dispersion as well as large birefringence of 0.296 (589nm). It exhibits pleochroic quality in which different colors such as yellow, green and brownish red, which can be weak or clear, are observed in certain angles. Its refractive indices of nω = 2.613 nε = 2.909 (589nm) give this gemstone its high price tag in the optics industry. Rutile crystals are also ranked high as the most stable when it comes to thermodynamics because of the prismatic or acicular growth habit they exhibit.

Though Rutile does not dissolve in acids, it fuses well in alkali carbonates. It is a stone with a moderate Mohs hardness of 6.0-6.5 and specific gravity of 4.23, which can go up with Nb-Ta content. It can be opaque in appearance even though it is mainly transparent in thin segments. It has a bright red to dark red streak with adamantine to a metallic luster. Rutile is a gemstone with a wide industrial application. Apart from being used as a material refractory ceramic, it can also be used in the manufacturing of titanium metal, plastics, paper, and paints. In the construction industry, it is well utilized as a welding electrode covering. Given that it is a large band-gap semiconductor, research is being carried out on how it can be used in dilute magnetism and photo catalysis as a functional oxide.

Metaphysically associated with the sun, Rutile is also renowned for its healing potency. Some local folks are using it to slow the aging process,  boost the immune function of their body, and revitalize their body tissues. It also believed to improve circulation and assimilation of nutrients in the body, as well as cure eating disorders. It is believed that possession of this Taurus and Leo stone will increase the person’s communication skills, insight, and awareness of the metaphysical realm.
