Rainbow Moonstone

The White Labradorite, better known as Rainbow Moonstone is a member of feldspar gemstones which normally forms on igneous rocks as a result of the cooling and solidification of the molten magma under the earth. Valued for its vitreous luster, the Rainbow Moonstone belongs to the lattice silicates mineral class which crystallizes in a triclinic system. It is chemically composed of 90 percent sodium and 10 to 30 percent calcium and aluminum silicate. The mineral is normally found in abundance in India and Australia.

 

It is available in different grades differentiated by the tint of their colors. The best variant which is regarded by some people as grade A is clear, iridescent and white in color and opaque with a good optical reflectance effect. The lower grade does not have good chatoyancy. It has blurred white color and can also be gloomy in appearance.  Its internal structure responsible for the color effect displayed by the stone is a laminate of feldspar. Some variants display a bluish shimmer effect produced by the potassium it contains. The stone can also be somewhat translucent. White Labradorite is poor in toughness with a Mohs hardness range of 6 to 6.5 and a specific gravity of 2.65-2.75. It has a transparent to translucent appearance with a positive optical sign and biaxial optic character. The gemstone manifests no pleochroism but it has a refractive index of 1.559-1.568 and double refraction of 0.009.0.009.
