Moss Agate

Moss Agate is a type of Chalcedony which refers to the general name for the fibrous cryptocrystalline variety of quartz. It is a readily available mineral formed by the deposit from meteoric groundwater that is rich in gelatinous silica. This gemstone is normally found in cavities and veins. Deposit from late hydrothermal solution close to, or on the surface of the earth can also form this mineral under a condition of lower pressure and temperature. The stone crystallizes into a massive form in green, white, and blue colors. In fossil bone and wood, it is available as a petrifying agent. Chemically composed and formularized as SiO2, Moss Agate forms in a hexagonal system and with a microfibrous structure solidifies into a banded or layered botryoidal massive substance.

Moss Agate is a very strong gemstone with a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale. With no cleavage, pleochroic and dispersion quality, the mineral has a specific gravity of 2.58 to 2.64. It double refracts up to 0.004 and has a refractive index of 1.530 to 1.540. Normally, the gemstone can be black, white, or black with white streaks but with impurities. It can have any color depending on the level and types of foreign bodies available. The whitish streak on the stone is as a result of the presence of chlorite-group or green amphibole minerals. It experiences a conchoidal to a splintery type of fracture. The stone has a dull vitreous to a greasy luster and translucent appearance but there are also some variants that can be opaque or transparent in appearance. When viewed from a distance, this gemstone looks like a tree or moss. Moss Agates are cut and polished and used by jewelers and lapidaries to make jewelry pieces and ornamental stones.
