The hexagonal crystal has a Moh’s hardness score of 7. The vitreous crystal has a specific gravity of 2.63 to 2.65. Chemically SiO2, it belongs to a class of quartz. The tinges of Carnelian occur due to impurities like iron oxide. With a molar mass of 60g/mol, it undergoes a splintery or conchoidal fracture. This gemstone commonly occurs in India, Germany, Brazil, and Siberia.  The natural forms need intense heat to give them a suitable hue for ornaments. Kornel’s color gives this gemstone its name as Carnelian owing to its cherry tinges. Cleavage planes do not cross through the crystalline pattern of Carnelian.
